Mig 15 vs Hawker Sea Fury | Untold Story from the Korean War
How a Hawker Seafury shot down a Mig 15 over North Korea. 1952 - United Nations’ forces had been fighting back a Communist invasion of South Korea for nearly two years. Amongst the various units that had been deployed to Korea was the Royal Naval aircraft carrier HMS Ocean and on board was 802 Naval Air Squadron. On the morning of the 9th of August four aircraft from 802 were tasked to reconnoitre railway lines near the city of Pyongyang. One of the pilots detailed to fly that morning was 21 year old Sub Lieutenant Brian ‘Smoo’ Ellis. Half way through the patrol they were attacked by a flight of Mig 15s. The Mig 15 was a new jet fighter. It was developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1940’s. With swept wings and nearly 6000 pounds of thrust, it was capable of 660 mph. On paper it easily out classed the Sea Fury. Paul Beaver takes up the story and interviews the pilot Brian Ellis. Follow us on social media @Aviators Lounge
In 2018, it was found that the kill may have been erroneously credited to Lieutenant Carmichael; The kill is now claimed by Brian 'Schmoo' Ellis, a sub-lieutenant flying in formation with Lieutenant Carmichael that day.[3] Ellis claims that he was the only pilot in the flight that returned with no ammunition left, while Carmichael only expended about 10% of his cannon rounds during a routine 'gun check' strafing-run on a stretch of sand.[14] Ellis claims that the Royal Navy simply awarded the kill to the most senior man in the flight – Carmichael – despite most of the flight knowing the truth.[15] The Royal Navy has not disputed Ellis' claim, although there is currently no way to verify the kill claim.
